Did you know...
Studies have shown while devices and screen time calm kids down short term, there are lasting long term behavioral issues. You will see more extreme behaviors from anger to hyperactivity.
Ear infections are one of the most common causes for doctors' visits, and recurrent ear infections make ear tube surgery the most common pediatric surgery. Could we be doing too many of those surgeries? New studies are showing many children will be outgrowing the recurrence within a shorter amount of time then previously thought. Food for thought to discuss with your doctor with the next ear infection!
Social media use and children is a hot topic in the news. Surgeon General says 13yrs is still too young to be on social media. Congress is trying to change minimum age to 16yrs, but what about the sites that are created for young children? Recent study shows bullying/ harassment is only one concern among children while on popular sites. See which ones rank on top among the culprits...
Sleep and child development has always been a conversation in pediatricians offices... lack of sleep leads to emotional lability, lack of attention, more impulsive behavior. Studies in the last few years actually show brain matter changes with decreased amount of sleep supporting the reason for these developmental consequences.

Dear Dr. Bhumi, I have been worried that my 9 month old baby keeps waking up at night every 3 hours to feed. Should I try to sleep train?
Dear Ally, thank you for asking such a common question that some parents don't want to admit to their pediatrician. Nine months is not too early to sleep train. You can actually start at 6 months old. However, do not start unless all adults in the household are on the same page. Have a nice daytime nap schedule and a consistent night time routine before the training. Once you pick a style and start, be consistent and don't give in. There are so many ways to sleep train, including the crying out or extinction, the chair method, the cry and console method. Which one is best depends on family dynamics and parent and child personalities. Talk to your pediatrician for further details.
