THE NEWS

Ulcerative Colitis, an inflammatory GI disease affects many children. Researchers may have found one food that may increase the risk- soybean oil. This was tested in mice and theory likely points to the linoleic acid that is causing the inflammation.

Croup can be a scary illness especially in the middle of the night when your child starts having a โ€œseal barkโ€ cough or breathing like Darth Vader. Those frightening calls to the pediatrician at night yields some common advice- moist air either hot shower, go outside in the cold air or open the freezer door for the child to breath some cool mist. Guess what, now research has finally proven that pediatriciansโ€™ advice was correct all along!

Rotavirus illness causes GI symptoms, but how can that be linked to future autoimmune disease? A recent study noted children who were hospitalized for rotavirus illness had an risked risk for autoimmune illness like childhood diabetes or Crohns disease. Just another reason to protect our little ones with the available vaccines.

Postpartum depression is a serious and often overlooked illness. It affects many women and if left untreated can cause harm to mother and child. As pediatricians, we monitor for this along with the momโ€™s doctors. Now there is an oral medication that has been tested and FDA approved for treatment rather then just general anti-depressant medication.
